Our top 5 most downloaded eBooks

List by Tosca

We have eBooks! You might know this already from an earlier October post in which I wrote about being a bloodless nerd and highlighted some fabulous arts and crafts eBooks. In that same post I mentioned that it was a relatively simple 4 step check out process to get you started and a few people scoffed. Scoffed, I tell you! And so, below the jump you'll find a quick rundown of the instructions you'll need. And remember - you can email me if you get stuck! On with today's list which is, simply, a roundup of our top 5 most downloaded eBooks :)

Honourable mention, i.e. Next 5 on the list:
  • After the kiss by Karen Ranney - historical romance, fiction
  • Brazen virtue by Nora Roberts - contemporary romance, fiction
  • Blink : the power of thinking without thinking - education, history, nonfiction by Malcolm Gladwell
  • Bedding the heiress by Cathy Maxwell - historical romance, fiction
  • Artemis Fowl and the Atlantis complex - junior fiction, science fiction and fantasy. by Eoin Colfer

  • Getting started: eBooks - The four step check out process for eBooks
Step 1 - Install free software
  • For PC, Mac and many eBook devices: Adobe Digital Editions
  • For Android or iPhone devices: OverDrive Media Console v2

  • Step 2 - Authorise the software
Adobe Digital Editions can be activated anonymously or by using an Adobe ID. Anonymous activation allows use on a single computer only, whereas an Adobe ID allows use on multiple computers and transfer to eBook devices.

Step 3 - Check out, download, and enjoy
  • Browse for a title in Downloadble Media
  • Add it to the eCart and check it out
  • Once you have checked out a title, a download page is displayed. Click the 'Download' link to start the download.
    1. For PCs and Macs: Adobe Digital Editions then opens and downloads the title.
    2. For Android or iPhone devices: OverDrive Media Console then opens and downloads the title.
Step 4 – Transfer to eBook devices
  • Open Adobe Digital Editions
  • Connect the eBook reader to your computer and follow the prompts to authorise your device. Use the same Adobe ID as in Step 2. Select the 'Library View' icon (in the upper left corner)
  • Click on the Adobe eBook you want to transfer
  • Drag the Adobe eBook to the eBook device icon in the left pane of Adobe Digital Editions

  • Boy : tales of childhood / Roald Dahl
Autobiography. Nonfiction. 'An autobiography is a book a person writes about his own life and it is usually full of all sorts of boring details. This is not an autobiography' - Roald Dahl Boy is the story of Roald Dahl's very own boyhood, including tales of sweet shops and chocolate, mean old ladies and a Great Mouse Plot - the inspiration for some of his most marvellous storybooks in the years to come. Like his stories, Dahl's childhood tales are unmissable. Including additional fun pages at the end of the book which give even more insight into the World's No.1 Storyteller.

Bound by marriage / Nalini Singh
Romance. Fiction. How else to describe the pact Jessica Randall had made with wealthy New Zealand rancher Gabe Dumont? In exchange for marriage and an heir, he would save her family property. The agreement was calculating, completely devoid of any tenderness, just like the man himself. Their relationship was supposed to be a simple arrangement. Instead, it was fraught with secrets and mistrust, jealousy and ultimatums—emotions that wouldn't allow her to maintain the distance she needed. Worse, the sizzling attraction between them made this marriage of convenience decidedly inconvenient.

    White satin / Iris Johansen
Romance. Fiction. In this classic novel, New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen spins a marvelous love story about a world-class figure skater, her distant, demanding mentor, and the high-stakes competition that could bring them together at last--or put all their dreams on ice. On the smooth, silvery surface of the ice skating rink, Dany Alexander cuts a figure of strength and fire, beauty and grace. One man alone is responsible for Dany's success: Anthony Malik, a former skating star who has managed her career for the past sixteen years. And for all that time, deep within his fortress of money, sex, and power, Anthony has found his attraction for Dany growing more intense. Now he wants Dany--not as a prodigy, but as a lover. Part guru, part taskmaster, and total mystery, Anthony is adept at finding out things about Dany that she's kept hidden--even from herself. The depth of his desire for her can't be denied. But what about Dany's own need to get to know her mentor as the man he really is? With the Olympics just weeks away, an extraordinary contest of wills has begun. It could culminate in a crushing fall, or the greatest prize of all.

The Fry chronicles : an autobiography / Stephen Fry
Autobiography. Nonfiction. Thirteen years ago, Moab is my Washpot, Stephen Fry's autobiography of his early years, was published to rave reviews and was a huge bestseller. In those thirteen years since, Stephen Fry has moved into a completely new stratosphere, both as a public figure, and a private man. Now he is not just a multi-award-winning comedian and actor, but also an author, director and presenter. In January 2010, he was awarded the Special Recognition Award at the National Television Awards. Much loved by the public and his peers, Stephen Fry is one of the most influential cultural forces in the country. This dazzling memoir promises to be a courageously frank, honest and poignant read. It will detail some of the most turbulent and least well known years of his life with writing that will excite you, make you laugh uproariously, move you, inform you and, above all, surprise you.

Sing you home / Jodi Picoult
General. Fiction. Max and Zoe's marriage, stressed by infertility problems and miscarriages, is finally destroyed by a stillborn baby. After their divorce, Max moves in with his brother and sister-in-law, Reid and Liddy, and backslides into self-destructive drinking, while Zoe devotes herself to music therapy and develops a friendship with guidance counselor Vanessa that eventually turns into love and marriage. Max, meanwhile, converts to an evangelical brand of Christianity that pits him against Zoe when she asks Max for permission to use their frozen embryos.

I don't suppose the library's lending stats say anything about what devices people have mostly downloaded the books to? In the age of iPad 2, iPod Touch, Android, the new Kobo, etc, it's hard to imagine anyone resorting to a large laptop (such as I have) - but I'd be happy to be told otherwise.

I'll definitely ask! I'm indiscriminate about where and how I access eBooks - iPhone, iPod touch, netbook, laptop (like yours it's a large one), desktop pc - I'll pretty much use whatever is handy and convenient for me at the time. Including the laptop :)
