"Never argue with the data."
- Sheen, a character from Jimmy Neutron (Mr. 7's fav geek cartoon)
I always spend my morning bus ride to work reading. Mostly books/magazines. Sometimes, though, I use it to clear RSS feeds. At last count I subscribed to 321 websites, blogs, tweestreams, Facebook pages that cover info/news about Auckland Libraries, books, libraries/librarians, social media, wrestling (don't look at me like that! I'm a WWE fan from way back in the 80s), and New Orleans. A lot of that time is spent outright snorting or furtively sniggering at various geeky posts. You may not have noticed (?) but I'm not a quiet person. I tend to react to everything out loud. So much so my bus co-passengers are often asking what I'm looking at. Now, none of you will have to guess, because I'm going to share with you 5 geeky websites that I think you might enjoy as much as I do. Choosing just 5 was hard. Is this how a parent would feel when they choose a favourite child? (I know mum and dad have a favourite child each, I forgive them. Kinda). What I opted for in the end was listing the 5 sites I visit the most (in no particular order). I visit these sites because their posts are crazy hilarious and/or thought provoking and, like the t-shirt says, "The geek shall inherit the earth."

Top 5 most looked at posts for February 2011
We've had a wonderfully eclectic mix of posts for February 2011 and, for those of you who are new readers, this is little more than a roundup of the most popular posts viewed this month. Weirdly, though, 2 are from last year. How odd!

Top 5 reasons to LIKE Auckland Libraries on Facebook
List by Tosca
"My oven has a button that says 'Stop Time'. I know it's probably supposed to say 'Stop Timer', but I don't touch it, just in case."
- Facebook status update (not mine but I wish it were because it's so full of WIN)
Auckland Libraries has a Facebook page. It's true - we do :) When I emailed all of the family I've ever known (and some I've never known) and asked them to check it out and click 'LIKE' if they support it, one of my siblings said, 'Why should I? Give me one good reason why I should.' I've always been a sucker for a challenge and 'Oneupmanship' is my middle name (ok, so it's not, but maybe it should be), and so a top 5 list was born. Here are 5 reasons to LIKE Auckland Libraries on Facebook.
Honourable mention:
You'll get to bump in to any one of the funny, witty and talented staff who will be responsible for updating the Facebook page - not that I'm biased :) You'll get to virtually meet Anne, Jo, Rachel, Sean and Tosca Tosca's typos and oddball sense of humour - either a wonder to behold or something to fear (I'm not sure which)

Top 5 romance audiobooks that made me blush
"Who, being loved, is poor?"
- Oscar Wilde
Who, being loved, is poor? Indeed! And who, listening to romance audiobooks, has blushed? Or gotten the giggles? Or started laughing and almost choked to death? Why, that would be me :) I heart romance books. I truly, truly do, but as much as I enjoy them I do find myself skipping the 'romantic scenes' if they are appallingly long. I mean, seriously, 20 pages?! Sometimes I find that 20 pages of seduction serves only to put me to sleep. I also find that when reading certain authors (think Laurell K. Hamilton) the ménage scenes leave me feeling conflicted because all I can think about is, 'Where are everyone's limbs?' and how if they're not in motion or use, is some poor sod feeling neglected and left out and cold? Yes, it's a sad and beautifully weird place inside my head. But romance novels in audio? Yikes. They're a different kettle of fish altogether.

Top 5 favourite NextReads eNewsletters for November 2010
List by Tosca
"Wear the old coat and buy the new book."
- Austin Phelps
I agree with the quote wholeheartedly. If it's a choice between anything and a new book, the book is always going to win :) People always look at me rather strangely when I tell them that the reason I work in libraries is because I heart books - little books, big books, bad books, brilliant books, fiction, nonfiction - if it's got words I'll read 'em! I have to guiltily admit that wherever I am I recommend titles for people to try *shamefaced look* As a result of this I find myself promoting books, and our library services, in the most unusual places: buses, Twitter, trains, standing in queues, with the checkout operator at Countdown Manukau, occasionally on Bebo, at the bus stop, on Facebook, over the counter and, last but not least, in our NextReads eNewsletters. Which, not-coincidentally, is the subject of today's post - a slightly long-winded list (I did *try* to keep it short and simple) of the top 5 November eNewsletters I enjoyed the most. Am I playing favourites? Yes. However, my favourites do change from month to month for various reasons. And my #1 choice might just surprise you :)

Top 5 things I heart about the Auckland Libraries website
List by Tosca
"My library
Was dukedom large enough."
- Shakespeare, The Tempest
I have to apologise for only having 2 posts up for the whole of October! Bad, bad library people. Danielle and I were both involved with the Auckland Libraries website which, funnily enough, is the subject of today's Top 5 post. What a coincidence. Well, no, it's not. The team who worked on this site did a great job and the site looks fantastic and it's worth sharing :)
If you haven't yet had the chance to check out the new Auckland Libraries website then...I'm going to think you live under a rock. Or, worse, without the internet *gasp* It has pretty much everything you'd need to know about what to expect from our library services as of 1st Nov 2010: membership, locations and hours, fees and charges, news, events, new and recommended titles, eNewsletters, digital library and a few other odds and ends. In today's post I've chosen the 5 pages I love most in the new site. I wanted to use them all and have double/triple-ups but that would be cheating :P Enough from me! On to the list. Each link will open in a separate window so you can check out the pros and cons of each page and still keep the Top 5 Goodies blog up.
