Papakura Library guest post: Top 5 songs featured on Glee

List by Emily

"Madonna belongs to me and I will not be copied. It's in my contract."
 - 'Coach Sue Sylvester' as played by Jane Lynch

From Wikipedia: Fans of Glee are commonly referred to as "gleeks", a portmanteau of "glee" and "geek".

I admit it - I am a Gleek. If you’ve been living in a cave this year and/or don’t watch television, Glee is the hit TV show about a high school glee club (aka show choir) that features numerous song covers sung onscreen by the characters. There is great variety in the songs that are covered, ranging from chart toppers to show tunes, old favourites to recent hits.

The first season of the TV show has screened in the US and just finished screening here in NZ, the second season is due later this year, and a third season has been announced.

Five CDs have come out of the first season alone – three full length albums and two EPs.

Below are my Top 5 songs from these CDs - which was not easy to choose, as there are lots of great songs sung by some very talented singers.

Honourable mention:
Beautiful (originally Christina Aguilera, featuring the powerhouse vocals of Amber Riley) from the album Glee: the music, Volume 3 Showstoppers
Bust Your Windows (also featuring Amber Riley) from the album Glee: the music, Volume 1
Glee: the music, Volume 2 - this great album isn’t represented in my Top 5, but definitely has songs that would’ve made a Top 10 list!

Alone from the album Glee: the music, Volume 1
Emily’s note: Glee have taken this great song and turned it into a duet, between the uber-talented Kristin Chenoweth in a guest role and the series star Matthew Morrison. Lots of emotion and passionate harmonies make it one awesome power ballad.

Don't stop believin' from the album Glee: the music, Volume 1
Emily’s note: Featuring Lea Michele and Cory Monteith on lead vocals, with the rest of the glee club members in support, this is such a feel good upbeat song that you can’t help but sing along to (quite possibly with hairbrush in hand).

Like a prayer from the album Glee: the music, the power of Madonna
Emily’s note: Starting with a spine-tingling solo from Lea Michele, this version of the Madonna hit becomes an awesome group song with input from all the young cast, and support from a choir.

Poker face from the album Glee: the music, Volume 3 Showstoppers
Emily’s note: A wonderful reworking of Lady Gaga’s energetic song, completely slowed down and turned into a beautiful vocal showcase for onscreen mother/daughter duo Idina Menzel and Lea Michele.

Dream on from the album Glee: the music, Volume 3 Showstoppers
Emily’s note: I already love this Aerosmith song, but this version makes me love it even more, and is an incredibly impressive sing-off duet between Matthew Morrison and the brilliant Neil Patrick Harris in a guest role.

Totally agree about 'Dream on', I adore Neil Patrick Harris! What a great dramatic duel in song! And I loved the remake of 'Poker face', too. Another favourite would be Jonathan Groff & Lea Michelle's 'Hello'. But my absolute favourite musical moment in Glee isn't even sung by the cast...that would have to be Kurt and the team dancing to 'All the single ladies', that whole scene is just genius. Love it love it love it.
