Top 5 musicals on dvd

List by Jax Williams

"Oh, yeah, I love DVD's. I don't have what you'd call an extensive collection, maybe a couple of hundred or so. But I have something on almost all the time."
- David Fincher

Hard to choose just 5 - in the end I had to cut from my list:

After a lot of scribbling and crossing out here's my final list.

Jesus Christ Supertar / Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice
A brand-new production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice classic musical, "Jesus Christ Superstar" tells the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus. It describes his entry into Jerusalem, the enmity that his preaching and his popularity causes among the Jewish religious leaders, his betrayal by Judas, mocking contempt of Herod, and the trial in front of Pontius Pilate, who despite his sympathy towards Jesus as a person, bows to the demands of Caiaphas, the Chief Priest, and has him crucified.

Jax's note: I'd like to make it clear that I much prefer the 1973 movie version of JC Superstar featuring the fantastic vocals of Ted Neely and Yvonne Elliman, but Manukau Libraries does not hold this particular copy.

Labyrinth / Starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly
Sarah, left to babysit her young brother, wishes he would disappear. So the Goblin King whisks him away to his Goblin Castle. Between Sarah and the Castle stands the labyrinth, where all sorts of endearing, tricky and delightfully mischieveous creatures lurk.

Jax's note: David Bowie. In tights. What more can I add?

Hair / Starring Treat Williams and Beverly D'Angelo
A country boy spends time in New York City before going to serve in Vietnam. He meets a group of hippies in Central Park and is swept up in the turbulence and protest of the times. Musical numbers include, "Let the Sun Shine In", "Hair", and "Aquarius"

Jax's note: This is definitely an alltime favourite.

Grease / Starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John
Musical about the romance between a teen-age gang-leader and his naive girlfriend, set in the 1950's.

Jax's note: Great music, risque lyrics.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show / Starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick
Fasten your garter belt and come up to the lab and see what's on the slab! It's The Rocky Horror Picture Show Special Edition, a screamingly funny, sinfully twisted salute to sci-fi, horror, B-movies and rock music, all rolled into one deliciously decadent morsel. The madcap, musical mayhem begins when rain-soaked Brad and Janet take refuge in the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite mad scientist from outer space who is about to unveil his greatest creation - and have a bit of fun with his reluctant guests! Join Tim Curry, Barry Bostwick, Susan Sarandon and rock star Meat Loaf in the most popular cult classic of all time. -- Product description.

Jax's note: Always wanted to attend a screening dressed up as any one of the characters. Hasn't happened yet.
